Yoga for schizophrenia patients - Schizophrenia Care and Research Foundation (SCARF) and Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram (1994)

This was a joint venture undertaken by Schizophrenia Care and Research Foundation (SCARF) and Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram. The objective of this program was to study the feasibility of teaching Yoga to schizophrenic patients and also to see the impact of the training on schizophrenic patients. In this program 30 patients were assessed and trained. It was evident that Yoga could not be taught easily and the asanas were modified for the patients according to the patients' conditions. The important findings of this program were that there was not much difference in the cognitive and Neuropsychological level but some behavioral changes were noticed such as improvement in motor skills, socialization, compliance with self, reduction in weight etc. However there were many dropouts during the study and there was no control group comparison.
