“Māsanām mārga śirṣoham” affirms Kṛṣṇa emphatically in the Bhagavadgītā thereby calling attention to the innate spiritual significance of the month of Mārgaśirṣa, also known as Dhanurmāsa and as Margazhi in Tamil. Throughout this month, in the south of India, the streets are adorned with beautiful Raṅgoli-s (designs created using rice powder) as the roads around temples reverberate with songs and melody. Mārgaśirṣa is the month before the calendar shifts to Uttarāyaṇa, the upward ascent of the sun, and also marks a period earmarked for spiritual inner work. This is a month that is held as special to devotees of Viṣṇu and Śiva, as showcased by the importance given to the Thiruppāvai of Andal and the Thiruvemppāvai of Manickavasagar. Both Vaikunṭa Ekādaśi and Ārudra Darśana also occur in the month of Margazhi, both marking important transitions in our personal Sādhanā.
The KYM is delighted to bring to you a daily evening meditative practice from Dec 16, 2024 to Jan 13, 2025 at 4 PM IST. This will be taught by Ms. Nrithya Jagannathan and will be offered at no cost to participants, with an intention to develop an interest and engagement in mantra Japa and Dhyānam.
